The Northern Hawk-owl is still being observed at the corner of Dyer's Bay Road and McNair Road (hwy 6 north to Dyer's Bay road, east approximately 2 km to McNair Road). The owl is often perched on the hydro wires and poles along the north side of the road. No reports of Snowy Owls yet. Northern Shrikes are being found and there are quite a few dark phase Rough-legged hawks this year.
Bald Eagles have been observed in several locations - Chantry Island near Southampton, Baie du Dore near Tiverton, Dyer's Bay road along the shore north of the hamlet. There is a Glaucous gull in the Port Elgin harbour along with many Ring-billed and Herring gulls. Bufflehead, Goldeneye, Hooded and Common Mergansers seem to be everywhere now. Thousands of Snow Buntings are winging around on the roads and in area fields. Pine Siskins, Juncos and House Sparrows are becoming more regular at area feeders. Common Loon, Long-tailed duck and an occasional Red-necked Grebe can still be found in Georgian Bay from Dyer's Bay to Cabot Head. The Tobermory CBC is tomorrow. It's cold and crisp with lots of open water - should be an excellent day! While I watched, it was dive bombed by a Blue Jay but refused to move. South River is on Highway 11 about 30 minutes drive south of North Bay and 3 1/2 hrs north of Toronto.
