Sandhill Cranes are passing through the area. A group of about 25 circled over the rivermouth at Southampton before continuing north yesterday. Pairs are being observed in area cornfields throughout the area. Snow Geese are being reported in the southern parts of the county. Eastern Meadowlarks, Double-crested Cormorants and Yellow-rumped Warblers have all returned in the past week. The first Belted Kingfishers have also returned in the last 2-3 days.
The Tundra Swans that were occupying the field west of County Road 3 (south of Burgoyne) appear to have moved on. Lakes and rivers are open and large numbers of waterfowl are moving around. All expected species of ducks - Redhead, Canvasback, Lesser and Greater Scaup, Blue-winged and Green-winged Teal, Pintail, Bufflehead, 3 mergansers species, Black Duck, Mallard, Ring-necked Duck - can be observed. Thank You, Mark! Having seen the request for assistance for the Owl Foundation, I am moved to a similar request for Eastern Ontario. Here we have the Wild Bird Care Centre under the able leadership of Kathy Nihei. She and her crew have certainly been busy this winter, especially with Great Gray Owls. We have had more of these magnificent birds than even during the last irruption! Like the Owl Foundation, we exist on occasional grants and mostly private donations. We have not had quite the number of Great Grays as Kay McKeever has had but our numbers have also been quite high. I also ask that those of you living in Eastern Ontario or birding here, consider sending your tax deductable contribution to: The Wild Bird Care Centre 73 Majestic DR.
