I have no problems using the assign abbreviation action. If the folder is
not in your catalog, then it of course will not display when you type the
abbreviation. Perhaps this is the problem?

Go to the catalog preferences <http://qs.qsapp.com/catalog> and make sure
the folder in question is actually in the catalog.
