Another Java-free alternative is Flite. According to the description in BLFS, 
Flite and FreeTTS should sound identically. Flite is English only, and needs 
patches in order to compile without errors and to use ALSA output instead of 
OSS: http://dialogpalette.sourceforge.net/extras/flite-1.3-sharedlibs.patch and 
http://dialogpalette.sourceforge.net/extras/flite-1.3-alsa_support.patch
