Apache Ant (required by FOP) also needs to be considered. And to answer the question, I've never tried with GCJ. Not sure we want to go there either unless significant testing is done. I'm sort of certain there are calls to 'java' and/or 'javac' in both FOP and Ant packages. As far as another PDF renderer, I remember Manuel saying once that passivetex won't work.
