Upstream is still reviewing gvfs patch though it has been bounced around for some time. Ideally, the --with-gio-modules-dir switch will not be necessary in future releases (or with -2 patch). As to why I did not use GNOME_CONFIG, I think I was only focusing on the gnome section of the book and had already introduced the gvfs change in my local copy before doing the GNOME_CONFIG POC. This would be no different than GNOME_PREFIX currently, however, it may be better to create an entity to the effect of "If you are installing outside of a gnome environment..." or such. Maybe that is overkill...don't know. I hadn't actually thought about it.
