As to why this version of gnome is fighting me on this computer with kde
etc installed, I have no idea.  I am only grasping at straws here.

As for where I found instances of gnome-icon-theme it was by looking in
the configure.ac file and found reference in there.

Those that require the adwaita-icon-theme have had reference to
gnome-icon-theme removed.

I do not generally trust what it posted on wikis as anyone in the
communities have editing access to them when registering.  It is only the
configure.ac files that you can actually trust, as these have ben made by
the people who actually code the applications.

I *believe* it was either a premature announcement by gnome, or that some
devisions of the gnome-team have not yet got around to removing all
references to it.

This makes it very confusing for us as end-users to actually know what is
going on.

The announcement lists should really only be made by those who actually
code the applications and really should be accurate.
