As to why this version of gnome is fighting me on this computer with kde
etc installed, I have no idea. I am only grasping at straws here.

As for where I found instances of gnome-icon-theme it was by looking in
the configure.ac file and found reference in there.

Do you not have a log of the build/install? It would be better to look there. For themes though, I would think those would be runtime, looking for specific graphic/css files in /usr/share/themes/.

Those that require the adwaita-icon-theme have had reference to
gnome-icon-theme removed.

Is that hard coded in the source or just in the build files?

I do not generally trust what it posted on wikis as anyone in the
communities have editing access to them when registering. I is only the
configure.ac files that you can actually trust, as these have been made by
the people who actually code the applications.

I *believe* it was either a premature announcement by gnome, or that some
divisions of the gnome-team have not yet got around to removing all
references to it.

I suspect the later. There are a lot of packages and a lot of developers. If there is not a conscious effort across all packages, then things slip through.

This makes it very confusing for us as end-users to actually know what is
going on.

The announcement lists should really only be made by those who actually
code the applications and really should be accurate.

Anyone can post to the announcement list?
