Yes, naturally. But imap is hardly a big risk: and you can even (tho' not
done often) run it alongside pop no-problem if you want to for whatever
reason - e.g. during a pop->imap transition phase.

You mentioned in reply to Fernando re access via webmail while
away-from-base/pop machine(s): one of the main advantages of imap, of course,
is that you can see the same complete set of mail folders across all of your
configured devices - phone/tablet/laptop/desktop/&c; your email doesn't get
fragmented across multiple devices unlike with pop; and you've still got
webmail for (secure?) access from devices where you haven't setup imap/pop.

Not assuming you don't know this, of course - kindof assume that you do.

Fwiw, here use both pop & imap on different sets of accounts (mainly re
dogfood reasons): but for main accts just ssh + mailx :)  .
