Nothing in Gnome *requires* OSS - everything runs perfectly happily
without it enabled in the kernel.

Might you have built one of the relevant packages before building
alsa-libs? If the volume control is affected, I'd guess at gstreamer
being the culprit, since most Gnome media stuff is built around it.
Could be that if it couldn't be built with ALSA support, it'll default
to OSS?

One idea - try running gstreamer-properties, or go to Sound Preferences
in Gnome. Do the various audio options include ALSA support, or just OSS
and ESD?
