I'll have to try building again w OSS disabled in the kernel; I'm guessing 
that something (probably gstreamer as you mentioned) detected OSS support in 
the kernel and configured itself accordingly.

I think it's more a case of "if OSS is enabled in the kernel at all, then 
gstreamer expects it to be enabled completely."  I'll attempt to verify this 
in the near future by making sure everything OSS-related is disabled in the 
kernel.

They show both, which is what leads me to suspect the above.
