 Well, thanks for ruling out some possibilities.  Turns out it's a
result of --enable-static=no !

Making all in doc

 In the meantime, 5.13 fails for me with the same problem as 5.14
(and I checked the system didn't seem to be running out of swap
space).  So, I'll take the patch in the original form, test it and
format it up (attribution to opensuse, explaining what it fixes)
with you as the 'from'.

 Since I advocate --enable-static=no, I'll probably mention the
patch when I put the page in.

 Sadly, although the test (string formatting) failures I saw in 5.12
were possibly corner cases, I don't have any confidence about this
package.
