I tried to upgrade my 'intel-gpu-tools-1.2' to 1.3 today. I have no idea what this package does or is good for but in true Linux-user fashion if I find a package vaguely installable anywhere I jump on it. Must be needed and/or good for something. Ask questions later (if at all).
Whatever; configure failed miserably telling me in no uncertain terms that it needs libdrm_intel >= 2.4.38 and I had only 2.4.33. In browsing through the latest BLFS libdrm-2.4.33 (of which libdrm_intel is part of) to my horror, I came across this Warning You may notice that there are several newer version of libdrm available upstream. However, we do not recommend using any later version than this one if you are going to build MesaLib-8.0.4 using BLFS instructions. Again, as a true Linux aficionado I said dam' the manuals and let's go ahead with libdrm-2.4.39. As expected, intel-gpu-tools-1.3 built/installed like a charm after that. But then some ugly thoughts started creeping in and nagging at me: Am I now condemned to run MesaLib-8.0.3 in perpetuity? Having just read the article, www.cnn.com/2012/08/27/tech/web/apple-linux-desktop/index.html?hpt=hp_t3 all that had me slide into a really dark mood. Am I at a crossroads? Has Linux reached the end of the line? With the thoughts of recent uncharacteristic Linus outbursts as well, that really sent me into a deep depression. Seemed like the end of the world was coming even before December 21. Quick note for people wondering why I said "uncharacteristic". The Swedish Finns are famous for their gentle, quiet, peaceful manners (not unlike the Amish here) so hearing some obscenity-laced rants by one of them is highly unusual and portentous of things turning really bad. Is it possible that what with Linus' exposure to Univision soccer here he was truely pushed over the edge? Should I continue to stay delusional and soldier on in Linux!? Some of my family and friends claim that my delusion might not be totally irreversible (as, unfortunately, usually is). They point to some (rare) moments of lucidity exhibited in my (no-expletive-laced) rant in the post linuxfromscratch.org/pipermail/blfs-support/2012-May/069986.html where they say I seemed to be months ahead of time (of the article) and clearly clear-headed. I shall see. Maybe I can compile MesaLib-8.0.4+ on libdrm-2.4.39 after all?! Cheers. As Murphy once said, "Smile... tomorrow will be worse".
