The basic problem seems to be that pod2man now dies on an error - previously it apparently put errors into the generated manpage but I can't see any obvious problems in my own cms.1 created by perl-5.16. For openssl, http://www.intestinate.com/pilfs/ reports that util/pod2man.pl in the openssl tarball is an older less strict copy.
