Hi Paul,
The BLFS book includes Tumbler as a package for XFCE (and it was there
also one year ago). If your copy of the book does not include Tumbler,
you should check and update it. The instructions already in the book,
without change, worked for me in order to have thumbnails in Thunar at
least for XFCE 4.10.
With regards to Thunar icons (this is a different issue, in fact) the
BLFS book specifies either gnome-icon-theme or lxde-icon-theme as
dependencies... but for runtime, not at build time. Looks like you built
XFCE without some runtime dependencies, so you had "expected" runtime
issues.
(Which was probably also my case because I was trying a "minimal number
of packages" XFCE: I surely did not include these two alien packages in
the build scripts so this is why I later ended up having to include the
Tango icons-theme manually)
