My guess is that there is a subtle hardware difference here that is causing
a rendering problem. One known cause of blank screens with an active cursor
under kde has to with the use of "compositing" to support all the special
effects kde has. If there is a quirk/difference/incompatibility in the
video hardware then whenever certain special effects are used, a problem can
happen.

FWIW, long ago (circa 1996) I recall a bug in a video driver that caused
MS Windows to crash when copying files - the flying-paper-between-folders
graphic effect is actually what triggered the problem.
