I've changed the subject, this is re *my* last build of plasma (on

I gave up there - but I suspect it appeared to hang at the splash
screen.

Mike, you continue to impress me with your ability to find useful
links from the past!

Because this build was on 7.9-rc1 (glibc vulnerabilities, if I
remember correctly) it was only retained in case I had a reason to
go back to it. It's an i7 haswell, so it ought to be powerful
enough, but all I remember is that plasma seemed to not start.

I can see that I had moved ~/.kde to a new name, and the replacement
.kde was missing most of the files. The system is set to start in
runlevel 5, with sddm. So, I logged in to icewm, reinstated ~/.kde
and edited it to not enable compositing. From icewm-session,
konqueror was its usual self, with a mostly blue first screen.

From there, I logged out and retried plasma - after a number of
seconds I thought it had died while starting up (a background, with
a progress bar). I went to a tty, logged in as root, checked the
sddm log (seemed ok), went back to tty7 and noticed that the runner
had started (top of the screen). I tried to type in 'konqueror'
there - my typing didn't seem to show, but after I had typed
konqueror I got a menu of options, and when I clicked on the
konqueror option I got konqueror - but with a mostly white window.

Logged out, logged back in to icewm and made notes, then logged out
and retried plasma. After 35 seconds it *did* start with a menu
along the bottom, and from there I managed to run konqueror (again,
with a mostly white initial window). And I also ran urxvt from
there, which is where I am now - an old system, two urxvt terms, and
using ssh to connect to my server.

So, once again, a BIG Thank You to Mike. This -rc1 build is now old
and my normal stuff such as firefox is antique, but I've managed to
start plasma. I guess that when we get to 7.10 I'll give it another
try. But kde is the last thing I build, after icewm and xfce, so I
guess it will be a long time until I get to plasma.

Cheers!
