I will try to come back to it once I get this new 7.10 (Hey, it's
new to me!) build working--can't figure why I get no sound from ALSA

longer work. (Using earbuds! :o ) And that Nouveau issue is still
outstanding.
Paul,
If you haven't already, unmute the audio in alsamixer, it's muted
by default
Yeah, I knew that--thought I'd done it--had pushed up the volume, but
forgot about the [MM] at the bottom. Thanks for "pushing" the
reminder. Was going to rip off a reply until I thought "just one last
check". <sigh>
But it turns up another question. I have an old .au file of Linus
saying, "This is {Leenus}..." and something else uniuntelligible, in
Finnish? I've used that as a sound check. aplay has no problem on this
Conroe/G43 chipset box. But a "format non[sic] available" error on the
i7/X58 chipset. Trying to find out why, I ran into "plugins" in
asoundrc, which were very mysterious, but also a suggestion that these
old 8000hz mu-law sources might not be usable on some devices. So I
don't know how much of this is done in software and what's in hardware.
What is it I should know, or where can I find an understandable
explanation?
I think you need libsndfile for the au format.
