HI Maria and all. Thanks for your responses. I have the office assistant turned off already, and have turned off "check spelling/grammar while you type". I've done a few google searches and have found that there are plenty of complaints about this problem but no solutions. maybe on this list between all of us, we'll figure out what the problem is.
