how is your external hard drive driven? Since it is connected to the 
USB port, I suppose that the computer provide the power for it?

One of my external hard drive which is 500 GB. and connected to a USB 
port has an AC adapter for its power. I do know that some flash disc 
which is connected to a USB port gets its power from the computer.

It's no wonder you don't have a power on and off switch. So, having 
it connected to your computer, you basically turn your external hard 
drive off when you shut down your PC. Is that right?
