Hi, I just had a thought of my own.
If this is a commercial system, such as the kinds that typically come from
companies like Dell, IBM and others like that, and, if they were a bulk
system, meaning it was one of their low priced models that they just
happened to be having a special on, then it may very well be that the front
headphone port was disabled, in favour of the rear line out port.
I found this to be the case on an IBM desktop I bought about 7 years ago.
When I went into the motherboard to re-connect it, I found it couldn't be,
as you either had to have one or the other connected.
This was also the case with my USB ports. I have two ports on the front,
and two on the back that were actually hidden by the rear plate on the case.
We swapped out the plate, and found the extra USB ports back there.
When we went to connect them, again, we found that we either had to have
only two connected to the motherboard at any given time.
So, I chose to have one in the front connected, and one in the back, for
printers and a USB hub I had.
The front I left open for cameras and any other quick plug and play devices.
Either way, this may be the case for your system.
Do you have the manual that originally came with your computer, and/or do
you have access to the documentation that came with your system?
If you don't have this information, you should give the company that sold
you the computer a call to find out what the deal is with it, and see if
they can do something about it.
Another thing you might want to try, if you have some sighted assistance is
go into the bios and manipulate your sound settings that way, and the ports,
to see if they're activated.
I think that may be the only way you've got to work with, and the most
effective way of checking to see if the port is activated.
