Janie,
There is one other thing to consider.  At the top of the google page, there
is a button which reads, "Screen Reader users check here to turn off Google
Instant."   Apparently, there is a special feature on google which tends to
confuse or completely disable screen readers.  The next time you're there,
try that out.
In addition, wasn't there supposed to be a special Google page for those
using adaptive technology?
That was a couple of years ago so maybe it was replaced by the check box I
mentioned.

I had similar problems using Jaws 9/10 with XP.  The problem started
suddenly and I spent months trying to figure it out.  When I removed Avast
and installed MSE, the problem stopped and has never returned.  If you use
Google as many times a day as I do, I feel your frustration.
