Hmmm, I’ll be interested to see how the map and such works, I did enjoy the
random elements in tks though overviewing 40 odd planets will be an
interesting challenge.

One thing I did like in time of conflict from gma games was the way that you
would be put to the next unit to give orders to each turn, and could look
around from that unit’s perspective and see for example nearest enemy, nearest
friendly unit etc so could make individual decisions easily, that was a nice
way of handling hundreds of units at once.

Anyway I’ll be looking forward to it as I did enjoy Tks.

All the best,

Dark.

Subject: Re: [blind-gamers] Accessible Risc?

We are actually working on three projects, but currently the space
strategy is the primary one. One is an in-house design program to
make building some of our games faster. The other is an expansion to
TKS. We haven't forgotten the interceptor updates, but we started the
TKS expansion first. We're currently doing the space strategy,
because in a moment of optimism, rightfully laughed at by Aaron, I
thought we could turn it out relatively fast. It's mostly finished,
but we have to get a few more kinks worked out, beta test, then
release it. The TKS expansion is probably half done, if not more, and
it will also take a while longer. The third project wasn't intended
to release, though we might do so at a later date. I don't have a
firm estimation for any of those projects. We'd like to get Expanding
Known Space, the strategy game done by the end of the year tops. TKS
expansion will be probably more like end of next year. It's a very
large change to the way the game handles, and it's involved a lot more
than we expected. Just as a sneak peak though for EKS:

Expanding known Space uses a 20 by 20 game board with 40 planets
spaced at random with random hazards just like in TKS. You are given
control of three of these planets at the beginning as is the computer.
You have a turn that runs in phases: you collect money, buy units,
move units, resolve combats, and then place units. This is a
simplification but gives an idea. Unlike SOUND RTS or Time of
Conflict, purchasing units is an instantaneous process, though you
can't place them til the end of the turn you buy them on. The board
is hidden until you find items with ships, and you have five classes
of combat ships and colony ships you can build from interceptors up to
battleships. Different ships have different movement, attack, and
defense characteristics. It's a fairly simple combat system. The
game is going to have a lot of hot key support to help deal with the
map which is difficult if you have a lot of ships moving etc, and
you'll have the ability to group ships into fleets for easier
management.

Take care,

Jeremy
