Ed, that kind of technieque works fine for vertical. I've also seen an idea where you create a rectangular frame with a hanging plumb bob in its center so that when the plumb is vertical, you'll know the bottom piece is horizontal.
But if you're trying to level a fence rail or a shelf, you need at least three hands. The Zercon level, although not very audible, is much less than $100.00, it beeps only when level, so you never know which way to adjust, but some find it better than nothing. Which audible level are you proposing to pay $100.00 for? I agree that's a lot, must be made by a blindness company.
