I don't think you are doing anything wrong except perhaps you have the instructions wrong. Seems to me that backing up the drill would simply withdraw the bit!
Maybe you are supposed to drill the device in backward until it is fully buried at which point it withdraws the screw. The other thing though that suggests itself to me is keeping the drill fully still and vertical. I have a heck of a time with that which is one reason I bought a drill press. The only sort I have had good success with are those you drill a hole then tap a very hard and sharp steel slightly tapered square peg into the hole and put a little wrench on that to turn out the screw. Being tapered it offers a little forgiveness for any wobble in the drill. Each size of inset has a specific size of drill bit so if you ever buy a set be sure to organize and label them immediately. If you are anything like me you won't and you will promise yourself to put them back in order immediately you have finished with using one and within a couple of weeks you won't have the faintest idea which is which. Anyway, check carefully the direction of the cutter as it turns in your drill, you may be using it incorrectly. Keep us informed, I am unfamiliar with that particular device and would like to know more.
