Hey Tom, Yeah, I agree about learning to tie knots. I have learned a number of knots but have always had to feel the process.
As a rock climber, backing up a bowline with a half hitch is absolutely necessary. The coolest knot tieing trick I know is the one handed bowline. Very cool and fast. The double fishermans is a great knot, and I always backup the tails with a half hitch on that one as well. the one knot I really wish I could remember to tie is the taughtline hitch. You basically get a long loop and the knot at the base of the loop can be slid up and down to adjust the length of the loop but tightens up under tension.
