My opinion is that 75% of the population change their oil to much. 3 months
or 3000 miles is normally for the severe duty vehicles. Look in your
owner's manual for this definition for your manufacturer. Most double that
for normal driving conditions. That being said, the only true way to know
when your oil needs changed is to have it tested. But the testing costs
more then the oil change.
I recently switched to Castrol Syntech with a FRAM X2 Extended Guard Oil
Filter, and plan on changing oil at 6000 miles. Some people don't care for
fram oil filters, but I have never had an issue, but then I never buy the
cheapest filter on the shelf either. My engine does run smoother and
quieter.
Some, or maybe all new GM vehicles have an oil change sensor. It actually
keeps track of the condition of your oil and lets you know when to change
it. GM has reported some people getting 10000 miles on their car before it
is needing changed.
People installing a by-pass oil filter, I think it is called, can get even
more mileage out of an oil change.
Do a Google search for extended oil change, and you will get lots of good
info.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] synthetic oil, interval between changes?

Can one change oil less often with synthetic oil as opposed to
regular oil? If so, how long is the interval between changes?
