Using a Micro-Adjustable Miter Gauge
>From "
DIY Tools & Techniques"
episode DIT-308 --

A standard miter gauge on a table saw doesn't always make perfect miters.
They're not designed to be fine cut tools. They are rough cut tools. In this
segment,
host David Thiel demonstrates a commercially available micro-adjustable
miter gauge that increases the accuracy and fit of miter cuts on the table
saw.

. A stock miter gauge doesn't always fit tightly into the miter slot. A
slight left or right shift of the miter gauge inside the slot during a cut
can be
a cause of imperfect miters. Also, if you pull the miter gauge back to make
a deep cut, the miter gauge may lift up out of the slot. This can also cause
imperfect miters. Some stock miter gauges only have 3 preset angles. The
markings are set far apart, making it difficult to achieve a precise angle
(figure
A).
. You can see a slight gap in a cut made with a stock miter gauge, as
opposed to the cut at the top of the picture (figure B), which was done with
a micro-adjustable
miter gauge. A micro-adjustable miter gauge has features that solve the
problems of creating miter cuts on a table saw. It has an Allen set screw in
the
center of the bar the gauge can be tightened into the miter slot. A washer
fits into the groove in the miter slot to prevent it from tilting upward
when
you pull it back to make a deep cut (figure C).
. This gauge has positive stops at every degree to help you achieve the
accuracy needed to create perfect miters.
. This gauge has several preset angles for you to use. If you're trying to
make a shape out of a certain number of pieces, you can check the guide on
the
miter gauge to tell you what angle you need to use for your cuts (figure D).
. The micro-adjustable gauge has its own fence that slides left to right so
that you can get a tight cut right up to the blade. You can extend the fence
so you can cut longer pieces more accurately (figure E). The stop on the
gauge allows you to make several cuts the exact same length. It can also be
used
with the extension. Flip the stop up to keep it out of the way when not in
use.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] miter gauge for Hitachi saw?

I'm trying to find a better miter gauge for my Hitachi table saw, but
my slots seem to be nonstandard. My present gauge is 14 inches long
and 5/16 inches thick. The bottom of the bar is 5/8 inches wide and
the top of the bar is 7/16 wide. The bottom is 3/16 thick and the
top part is 1/8 thick. Does anyone know where I can get one? I have
googled it and looked on some of the sites but they all seem to sell
the standard size.
