I just tried that with two different light probes, one from ILA, a little
square key chain type and the other has a built-in color identifier, but
neither one showed any significance using the measuring levels. The fuel level
indicator is in a round, but not too long protuberance on top of each tank. I
think I'll try something else since a good idea would be a dip stick which I
believe can be managed.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] tested light sensor heating oil fuel gage

Earlier today my wife checked the gauge and it indicated half full. I just
went and used my nfb light sensor and about half way down the tube there was
a significant change in pitch. I don't think that this sensor is as good as
the science products one was. That had a much narrower window since the
sencer was inside a very narrow tube. This one can give me a close guess but
not enough to totally rely upon.

Tom,
I have been pondering over that. Looking at mine my fill cap is outside. I
think that possibly the science products light sensor on a probe may work. I
no longer have one so I can't test the theory. On my tank the float is
white in a clear tube. I would think that the light sensor on the probe
would notice the difference when it passed over the float area
I do have the NFB light sensor I will try that in the next day or so.

Is there a fill cap directly on top of the tanks?
If so, make up a stick a bit longer than the depth of the tank with a small
float
like a pingpong ball on its bottom.
Then open the fill cap and extend the stick down into the tank till the
float
hits the oil and you feel the resistance.
You might need help marking the stick to coordinate witht the gauge but that
should do it.

If the fill cap is up on ground level, I'll have to puzzle about that a bit.
