Problem with that is wouldn't the light director as such pass light, what if it 
is dark to begin with as it almost always in my basement?

build a thin tube for the front of your light probe, maybe with a straw or
something only make sure it isn't clear. Doesn't have to be very long, an inch
or so should do it.

You might be seeing the surface of theoil or the float, doesn't matter.
