I have one of those bits a 1/4" however it is in that proverbial safe place.
Years ago there was a hard to find tool catalog. My brother purchased a set
of these bits, a set of reverse twist drill bits and a set of bits that were
all the same length. I sure would like to get a set of each.

I remember a bit some time back that began with a normal drilling tip but
further up the bit it had small teeth and one was supposed to be able to
then move it sideways and these teeth which were from memory half file-like
and half small saw-tooth like, would work like a saw. I know my memory
alone isn't much to go on here, but perhaps others have seen a similar bit.

Thanks all for your input. I don't have many holes and am famously hard on
drill and router bits so think I'll try the file.

  Ralph,
Drill the hole at one end of the prospective slot, get a rat tail file
just
  a bit
smaller than the hole and grind away.

You might try drilling and pushing sideways on the board, but you'll end
up
breaking bits. You can get router bits pretty small but when they're
that small, assuming big enough for a number 4 screw or the like, the
surface speed of the bit gets pretty low and they're not efficient.

A file's the way to go unless you've got lots of holes.
