What I actually ended up doing is drilling two holes and using a chissle to clear out between them. I liked the file idea but don't have one and didn't want to wait until I can get one.

If the slot is less than twice the diameter of the bit, I don't think it would work to drill a second hole as the bit would want to walk into the other hole. -- Blue skies.
