This is what I've done in the past but used a standard drill to do the hole
and then put one of those plastic inserts in and then a screw into that.
Does the hammer drill make a hole quicker than a standard drill with a
masonry bit? Also, can you describe a tapcon screw? I may know what they are
but by another name.

  Al,

I would not expect one of those auto hammer deals to be good for nailing a
2X4 to concrete. I've been doing something similar in my basement, but
opted for drilling into the concrete with a hammer drill and using Tapcon
screws to screw the boards to the floor. My brother-in-law who is a
contractor recommended doing that over shooting nails.

  Good luck.
