Al, Yes, you can turn on and off the hammer action. However, hammer drills do tend to be a bit bigger and heavier duty than your run of the mill drill. They aren't beasts, or anything, but they tend to be a bit larger, often with two handles to help hold them steady. I don't typically drag mine out unless I am doing something big, like concrete, or trying to plow through something particularly thick.
