Subject: <E30> clapping noise from ABS?
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Car is an '87 325iS. Recently it started making a noise that is best
described as that of when a fan blade is slapping a piece of plastic.
But it's not the fan and it's not RPM related. It is intermittent and
stops instantly if the brakes are applied, whether the car is in motion
or not.

There is no predicting when it will occur. Sometimes it's right after
starting and then not again, other times while sitting at a stop sign.
I have never heard it above maybe 25-30mph.

The brakes work OK and the ABS seems to be doing its job.

I've had my head near the engine bay when it's happened, and it sounds
like it's coming from below the ABS unit, closer to the power steering
pump, but I wasn't able to feel the ABS unit to see if there was any
vibration as it clapped.

I've never heard of anything like this before and would appreciate
suggestions on what to look for.

Well, I've decided to sell my 740i to get a 525i wagon. Details below:

Calypso/Royal Red metallic with black interior. Sport Pack with Steptronic,
Cold Weather Pack, (upgraded DVD - MKIV) Navigation, Xenons/projector beams,
power rear sunshade, side sun shades, integrated/concealed iPod (Dension
ICELink), factory rubber floor and trunk mats, plus original carpet mats.
Leather is in great shape. Two sets of wheels - 18" M Parallels (brand new
summer tires) and 16" Style 61 Radial spoke with snow tires (Blizzaks).
Custom 2" receiver hitch using factory install points (used for bike rack).
Custom exhaust to add a subtle, slightly agressive note. No resonance, have
to pay attention to hear it. Best part is that it opened up breathing so
the car gets 27mpg @ 72/73 mph!

Fanatical maintenance with detailed records available upon request.
Transmission fluid (by KMS) and final drive fluid changed at 100k. Engine
oil every 7.5k (Mobil 1) all common E38 issues fixed - radiator/surge tank,
front bushings, valley gaskets, gauge cluster pixels, rear ball joints. This
car is a great cruiser. email for pictures. $21000 obo
