The Outsiders movie is pretty much the same as the book. I know how tough it can be to get the kids to read assigned books, even the good ones! There's just something about being told what to read that turns them off. Maybe if he sees the movie he'll at least give the book a shot since it's not a very long one.
Since my daughter was just bouncing around the house doing nothing and driving me crazy I asked her if she ever started The Outsiders (which I knew she hadn't) and she willingly (shocker!) went to the shelf and got it and has been reading quietly for the past 45 minutes!
