Just for completeness, I ordered an equal SDRAM chip and replaced the existing one with it. It has only gotten worse since then. The display shows only garbage now, if anything at all. Powering up succeeds once a day so the display gets bright. Any next attempt to cut power and plug in again ends with just the keypad going through some illumination schemes (maybe it wants to tell me something but without documentation...?). The display gets power at the usual voltages but is not showing anything. Ethernet is dead, too. The router does not indicate any sort of link. I'm now more clueless than ever. Probably time to think about tearing it all down and sell the parts.
On the other hand, I asked Logitech whether they have plans to make the documentation public. Now that every Squeezebox device is probably out of service and also out of warranty, it would not hurt them. There is no reply yet but I still have hope.
