For what it's worth to you, everything that follows in your post isThanks. FWIW, the "rules" I use depend on my motivation for posting. In this case, I wanted to capture an observation "for posterity" :) - I didn't expect it to be of much immediate use to anyone on the list. However, I can envision someone getting stuck this and running a few searches on the list archives, say for "bjam close bracket regex escape"... Responses to a current, specific question can be simultaneously brief and illuminating, but hard to find if you aren't monitoring that specific thread. I get more verbose when trying to anticipate future searches on the list archives. (although maybe I should have put this in the boost.build list)
"skip to the end" material for me. I know the rules are different in
other environments ... You obviously have a lot to contribute here
and I wouldn't want the salient stuff to get missed just because of
stylistic issues.
Part of the issue is that while mailing lists aren't the ideal place to store this kind of information, they appear to be the best we have for now. Eventually we should be putting all this into a common "knowledge base", but we don't have one of those yet...(or have I missed something?) so I've been occasionally using the mailing lists to store various tidbits until we do. Does this make sense?
I'd welcome any suggestions on a better way to address this. The mailing lists contain a wealth of useful information, but it isn't always easy to get what you need out of the archives. Are there any existing stylistic idioms which could clearly identify this type of post? I'd certainly be interested in any projects geared towards collecting and indexing this kind of information (something a little more structured than Wiki).
Anyway, I hope you don't find this advice offensive, but speakingNo offense taken. Just trying to be helpful, and I tend to be stubborn (if occasionally long winded) about that. I'm honestly thankful - at least in this particular case - that most members of the Boost community aren't as sharp as you happen to be! while( sarcasm_level(read_between_the_lines(original)) > 0.0 ) ; Otherwise I wouldn't have much worth contributing... ;)
personally, I'd rather not lose the value of your participation on
account of my own lack of time.
