I am not disagreeing that one should shut down the equipment first when ever
possible, but now days with machines on the go it might be the best Corse
of action to shut down power to any electrical unit first, but not
necessary, there is circuitry in place to protect it.

I would guess that when anyone takes their equipment to work or
school that it's never unplugged from a wall socket first. Most
people have things plugged in, and if any one has an office like
mine, you'd have to crawl under the desk to plug and unplug. I
will say that equipment should be shut off before plugging and
unplugging.
