I must be crazy, updating was only exciting for me, it always is, computer, Braille note, whatever, I update and never really fear it won't work. In the past 25 years only one update I installed really gave me trouble, a program that is no longer available did cause my computer to reboot every few minutes but getting rid of it solved the problem.
To me updating is a thrill, something like you might feel if you could just fly without an airplane. I find it kind of scary dispite being very experienced with installing software on my computer. Doing an update to a device like the braille note is very different and because you are actually changing what is in ROM, it has more potential for causing trouble. If you don't have a computer to help you straighten out any problems caused, or just to refer to the directions again it could be an issue. Possibly the braille display of your Braille Note is the only one you have. The 6.2 build 25 patch is the only update I have ever done to my braille note and since I was on the phone with Humanware tech support for another issue when I found out about the update, which it seems was supposed to already be installed on my unit, but somehow wasn't, I was talked through the process. From what I recall happening during that update, it is very possible to install an update using only the feedback from your braille display. Of course the tones are helpful and reassuring to people who can hear them, but I believe they are not required. Actually, I would find updating without the progress percentage displayed in braille more nerve-racking than not hearing the sounds the BrailleNote makes. I hope you can find someone to go through the process with you, so you can feel confident in it's success. I know it is easy to get upset and worry about what you might be missing, because of course I experience that feeling when I find something difficult and wonder if it is difficult because I am not able to see something. At times that is the case, but very often I discover that whatever seemed so hard was actually confusing to other people as well. :-) I often use my BrailleNote with speech disabled and find that speech or beeps are really not necessary. I think I would have a bit of a problem when resetting if I didn't hear the beep when reset is pushed hard enough. I sometimes push at it without actually getting it pushed in hard enough to reset, and the beep is the first thing that lets me know it worked. Of course you eventually find out if it worked by what the display does, but it takes a bit longer. I also think it would be good if the display would do something to show progress while files are being copied, because although you know when it is done, you can wonder if it froze or something if you aren't hearing progress beeps. I can tell you that progress beeps aren't always reassuring and are certainly annoying to hear for a long time, though. <grin> Sarah Van Oosterwijck Assistive Technology Trainer http://home.earthlink.net/~netentity ----- Original Message ----- From: kathleen spear To: Braillenote List Sent: Wednesday, January 25, 2006 3:45 PM Subject: Re: [Braillenote] Version 7 installation Hi Sarah and List, Wel, dear lady, you have a good point! Blindness isn't the issue when it comes to downloading. However, it does help if you have experience installing software and are generally handy with computer-related stuff! What I'm curious to know is, do you have to follow beeps and tones when downloading? Also, are the product keys correct ow? (I have some frustrated deaf-blind friends asking these questions!) Needless to say, I wouldn't attempt to download on my own. However, even with the SD card, I need to know if the download requires following beeps and tones?
