Hi folks,
On the subject of XL, I'm not saying I don't want it. I'm saying that for
the purposes of financial management, XL is not the right tool for the job
for most of us.

By all means, HW should put pocket XL on the BN, but they should also create
a financial management package for those of us for whom XL is not the
answer.

Rusty

Hello Rusty,
I believe that you have some good ideas here.
But I would say that many college students need excel because that is simply
what is used on campus.
So, I would say, if it is possible, maybe Humanware could eventually make it
so that one could easily choose which they prefer.
Just a suggestion.
Robert

>Hi folks,
>This was obviously a popular topic and it brings to light the
real necessity
>of a financial package on the BN.

>In answer to those who are afraid of carrying financial info on
their bn,
>there are several possibilities that I can think of.

>1. The program could be password protected. To enter the
keymoney program,
>please enter your password.
>2. The most obvious argument is, who's going to seek out
braillenotes and
>learn how to hack them just to learn my sorry financial state?
This is such
>an obscure device that HW is not designing a virus package
because people
>won't write viruses for it.
>3. I certainly wouldn't store SSN ETC.
>4. Put your finances on a flash card and store it some where
else.

>As for working across platforms, I believe that Quicken uses a
file format
>that can be shared. If not, there are exchangible file formats.
So you could
>work on the BN and then import that info in to your pc program.
In addition,
>many banks offer you the ability to download account history
suitable for
>import in to your money program. To be really useful, The
keymoney program
>should support these file formats and play well with other
programs.

>As for this idea of using XL, this is exactly what I suggest we
stay away

to manage

program, but
>something like quicken takes the difficulty out of things. I
don't think
>most want to learn how to configure quicken, set up formulas,
lable rows and
>columns, ETC! I believe that more people will use a program which
does the

>I suggest that it should have several entry fields. Type of
transaction
>(ATM, check, deposit ETC,) category (household, business,
investment,
>entertainment, ETC,) Check number (if aplicable,) account,
amount, it will
>enter the date and do an automatic calculation of what I should
have in my
>account. It could also add or subtract from a running total,
based on the
>category, of how much I've spent in a particular area and show me
how much
>I've spent in a particular budget area.
>Since I don't now use a financial package, but will start soon, I
don't
>really know what else it might have just yet.

>If this is not the only program I use, then it should be able to
store the
>info so I can then cync to the PC later.

>Additionally, there should be a set of formulas, interest
calculator,
>compound interest calculator, stuff like this.

>This is not anything new. I believe that some other program such
as quicken
>could, and should, be ported to the BN. No sense reinventing the
wheel, and
>it makes sense to stay as close to the industry standards as
possible.

>Thanks for reading!
