Unfortunately, identity theft is a big problem in the United States and, probably, other parts of the world as well. This is why it is not a good idea to keep financial information on something as portable as the BN or VN. I have heard programs on the subject of identity theft and if it happens, I have heard it is a major pain to clean it up. This is why less portability with financial information is better.
