Hi all, I saw this message and wanted to write about my experiences.
I bought a BrailleNote classic in late 2002 and used it for a good 3 years until janurary of 06. Scince the mPower came out in june 05 I'd been wanting one. So in janurary of 06 I sold my BN classic and purcheased, yes, sorry to get people compaining, a Pacmate and used it until june of this year. I had a lot of problems as it wasn't right for my needs. It seemed to be at first, but I found for the work I was doing and still am doing, it just isn't meeting my demands. SO I sold that (not because it wasn't working,) it is a good unit and I must say that the product is good, but make sure you really do serious research about what it is you want to buy before forking out your money. I now have a BrailleNote mPower BT18 and love it! I also have a PDA with MobileSpeak pocket as my mobile phone. So I syncronise everything between my PC, my BN and my PDA so I have a good syncronised list of appointments. One thing that would be nice is if you could sync directly with the PDA rather than needing the PC in the middle but perhaps that is for the future. I'm sorry this message is long but I felt I should write about my experiences. I must say Humanware have always had excellent service and I've never had a problem with my Units. The Mpowers have a much quieter Braille display and serious Braille readers love it. However a brand new unit is a lot of Euros and doing a transplant can save you a lot of money. Far as whether you should buy a BrailleNote or a packmate, I personally own a BrailleNote and love it. You should ideally get a hands-on trial of a current model of each and try them with real-life tasks. Then you may make an informed decision. Hope this helps.
