That is probably worht trying. The other  thing that will determine whether 
or not your friend will need a battery replacement is how long has she had 
the PK, and has she ever sent it in before for a battery replacement. If you 
first try the recalibration with the AC adapter plugged in, which is the 
only way that the unit will power up; then gather the information about the 
life of that battery.
