Hello,

The Daisy format is designed to make books and other reading material more
easily accessed by the blind reader. There are three basic types of Daisy
items, 1. Speech only, 2. Text only, and 3 Speech and text combined.
Regardless of which one of these types you use you have the ability to
navigate the file more easily than a standard TXT or BRF file. For example
I get newspapers from the NFB NewsLine service delivered in my e-mail box
each morning. They are in Daisy text format. When I open one of these up
on my BN I can jump from section to section, article to article, go to a
specific page etc. by using simple commands. I can then either read the
article in Braille or listen to the synthesizer on the BN read it. If the
file were a Daisy speech file I could use the same navigation commands and
move quickly through the recording. If the file were a Daisy speech and
text file I could listen to the recorded speech and read along with the text
in Braille.

Daisy really has nothing to do with the type of information contained in the
file but rather it provides the ability to navigate quickly and efficiently
through the information. The other thing is that some Daisy books have
different levels of navigation in them depending on how they were created.
Some will let you navigate by sentence, word, paragraph, page, section,
chapter, etc. This will continue to get better as new materials are
produced. HTH.

Karl

I hate looking through tapes too. What I don't understand though is that
the DAISY books that are supported on the BN from Bookshare are text-only,
so it's pretty much the same as reading a text or BRF file, except that it
takes up much more space. If the DAISY books had recorded narration, then
that would be different.
