I must see if that's the case with the BN as, if it still works OK, I'd
quite like to turn mine off as maybe then others have no idea what you're
using if they play around with their PDA's in your home. (No, I am
convinced they can't get in anyway but would like just to stop them even
knowing what the router is.)
Any ideas where you turn off the SSID broadcast, generally. I have a
Linksys.

Hi Kathy,
No, WEP, if set up right, should not cause problems for the BN. There have
been instances where the key is difficult to enter on the BN, usually
because it's case-sensitive. As far as the modem goes, as Richard already
said, the firewall which is built into the router will keep anyone from
getting past the modem and into the network. I have the same set up, and in
over three years, no unauthorized person has ever gotten into the system.
However, I'm not sure about this, but something tells me that if SSID
broadcast is turned off, the BN will not be able to see the network
wirelessly, which also defeats the whole purpose. I really think, if the
network is secure, there shouldn't be anything to worry about. Feel free to
call me if you want to go over this in more detail.

Hi, Sarah,
Thanks for the post. You've probably already seen my
modification, that I should have said modem and not router that
he wants off most of the time, which defeats the whole purpose of
having wireless.
The suggestion of turning off the SSID broadcast has been passed
on to him, so perhaps that will help.
You mention WEP. Am I remembering correctly that that can cause
problems with the BN?
Thanks again for your post.
Kathy

Hi Kathy,
Rich and I leave our router on all the time and there is no
problem. There's really no reason to switch it off. If there is
a worry about security, set up the router with WEP, and no one
will be able to access your network unless they have the WEP key.
