Hi Sarah and all,

If broadcast is turned off other devices won't see your wireless router, but
this does not effect any device such as a braillenote if the braillenote
already has
the connection configuration set up. If you connect with that configuration
you will be fine whether broadcast is on or off. The only time you might need
to
turn it on is if something happens to your connection configuration in the
braillenote and you need to do another scan for available networks on the bn.

In such a case you could enable broadcast on the router for a minute or so
until the bn has found the network and stored the settings and then turn it off
again.

In short, if broadcast is turned off, a device cannot connect to it unless it
already knows it's there and also knows the proper settings to establish a
connection.

Hi Kathy,

No, WEP, if set up right, should not cause problems for the BN. There have
been instances where the key is difficult to enter on the BN, usually because
it's case-sensitive. As far as the modem goes, as Richard already said, the
firewall which is built into the router will keep anyone from getting past the
modem and into the network. I have the same set up, and in over three years,
no unauthorized person has ever gotten into the system.

However, I'm not sure about this, but something tells me that if SSID broadcast
is turned off, the BN will not be able to see the network wirelessly, which
also defeats the whole purpose. I really think, if the network is secure,
there shouldn't be anything to worry about. Feel free to call me if you want
to go
over this in more detail.

Sarah

Hi, Sarah,
Thanks for the post. You've probably already seen my
modification, that I should have said modem and not router that
he wants off most of the time, which defeats the whole purpose of
having wireless.
The suggestion of turning off the SSID broadcast has been passed
on to him, so perhaps that will help.
You mention WEP. Am I remembering correctly that that can cause
problems with the BN?
Thanks again for your post.
Kathy

a worry about security, set up the router with WEP, and no one
will be able to access your network unless they have the WEP key.
