Dear List,
Here are the steps for writing Spanish accents using a QT keyboard. I'll
use a acute as an example.
1. Press function with x to bring up the unicode character prompt.
2. Search for a acute by typing a acute and press enter.
3. You will see the first choice cap a acute. Press the space bar until
you find a acute.
3. Press enter. A acute will be written.
To create a macro so you don't have to go through these steps all the time:
If you haven't exited the unicode table and your cursor is still on a acute,
skip steps 1 and 2 and press control k.
1. Press function with x.
2. Find a acute but don't press enter. Instead press control k.
3. press a to assign a macro to it.
4. Type one or two letters then press enter. For example type a and press
enter.
5. You will be prompted, "assign function with c then a (or whatever
letter(s) you typed) for a acute?" Press y for yes. Now, every time you
want to write a acute, press function c a enter.
To assign a computer braille symbol to a cute:
If you are still in the unicode tables and your cursor is on a acute, press
control d. Then go to step 4.
1. Press function with x.
2. Find the character the same as you did when you wrote it and when you
assigned a macro to it.
3. When you find the character, don't press enter. Instead, press control
with d.
4. Press a to assign a computer braille symbol.
5. Press a to assign a symbol.
6. You will be prompted, "dot combination to display the symbol as?" Press
the dots using the home row as if you were writing a braille document. FDS
is 1,2,3 and jkl is 4,5,6.
7. You will be prompted, "display a acute as (the dots you press)? Press y
for yes.
You can now write and see it displayed in computer braille.
A detailed escription of all these features is in chapter 5 of the manual.
I hope I'm not too confusing!

Hi Terri and all,
Don't have a clue how to do this on the BN because I don't have one yet,
but I can help with the accent piece.
For correct Spanish accents you need the acute accented letters, plus the
tilde, and the upside-down question and exclamation marks. The grave
accents are used in French and Italian, but not Spanish. There will also
be a few rare occasions when you will need a U with a diaeresis, but that
doesn't come up too terribly often.
HTH,
Donna

In the tables for the full version of DBT 10.6, there is a table for
uncontracted Spanish braille. The uncontracted braille was always used
when
I went to school many years ago. So, there is such a thing as
uncontracted
Spanish braille.
If you use a QT keyboard, you'll have to use the unicode tables. You
will
need to find out from a sighted person which accents look the best in
print.
For example, the unicode tables have a acute, a a grave, a diaeresis and a
ring above and the cap a for all of these. The tables have a tilde n and
the inverted question mark and inverted exclamation point, so there should
be no problem with them.
On the top of the file, press either the space bar or the enter key and
then
press read control b c so your document will be displayed in computer
braille.
You will also need to assign a braille symbol to display the accents in
braille. You can assign macros to all the accents so it won't take so lon
to type them.
I can give you instructions on how to do these things, but I need to know
the correct accents for the vowels so I don't steer you wrong.

I am so confused on how to get my spanish to work on the bn I also have a
qt. I have tried everything I know to think of. I tried computer
braille,
qwerty which are the only options I think. There might be grade 2 also
but
there is no grade one for spanish like there is french. Why is that? I
couldn't find anything in the tables of characters either. I tried 8 dot
braille and I am just not getting anywhere with it.

Sorry, I thought you had a bt. I have never used a qt, so can't say
what
would happen. Give it a shot; you can always get back to the Options
menu
to change it back, and if things do go wrong just erase keysoft.ksd
from
the dictionaries folder of your flash disk and reset right from file
manager (which you should use to erase it) otherwise the file will be
recreated and will have no effect. Hope this makes sense; I am pretty
tired and my brain is shot after doing a bunch of ftp and dos scripting
(yes some people still use it! <smile>)
Have a great day,
Alex

Hi, Alex,
I've tog a QT keyboard and I only need to use foreign languages
occasionally. I agree the unicode tables are tedious, but if you
use a
particular character often enough, you can create a macro. ... I
guess I
could try 8-dot braille with the QT ... I wonder if the qt
commands would
be affected by it.

That works, but it is tedious; just use 8-dot. I just discovered
something: to make the next character only 8-dot, press
backspace-h and
you can use 8-dot on the next character you type. This avoids
having to
press space with all commands.
Have a great day,
Alex

Hi, David,
I think you'll have to insert the accents using the Unicode
Tables. I'm a
QT user, so I can't go through the steps with you, but a BT
lister could
help you.

Subject: [Braillenote] Spanish Accents
Hello, List,
I am using Spanish computer braille with the Spanish language,
but I have
a problem with accents. I can't enter them correctly. For
instance, an
accented n is displayed in braille as dots 1-2-4-5-6, but when I
enter it,
it says 7. How do I resolve this problem, and will there be
grade 1 and 2
support for Spanish and Italian?
David
