Hi Carol and All,

I've had my PK for just over three years now, since November of 2004. And,
so far, knock on wood, I've had no problems with my Braille display. Best I
can tell, all the dots seem to be okay, and I've never sent mine in for
cleaning or maintenance or anything. I do toy with the idea once in awhile,
but would be afraid of having an experience just as you're having now. And,
too, knowing that PK units can easily be gone for two or three months while
waiting for these parts, I've so far subscribed to the if it isn't broke
then no point in trying to fix it route.

Subject: [Braillenote] THE LIFE EXPECTANCY OF A BRAILLE DISPLAY IN THE PK

Hi all,

I'm writing to ask your thoughts about the life expectancy of the PK's
braille display. I've had mine for almost two years now, in regular use,
but I use it only with clean hands, haven't dropped or knocked it
(knowingly) and have now had to send it in for maintenance. With carriage
and battery replacements (the latter two charges being expected), I was
somewhat gutted to learn that, in order to deal with some faint dots, they
want to replace the whole of the Braille display ... The cost, though I
don't have a final figure, is therefore going to work out at over a third of
the cost of the PK and probably near to £1500 (UK pounds)!

I'm also very annoyed to learn that they have to order spare parts before
this work can be undertaken.

My questions are, how long have PK users had their units and the displays
been OK? Have you had to have a display replaced, or have they replaced
separate cells?

I would welcome any feedback, please.
