Yes, the topic has been discussed and 5 years of answers are in the
archives. There are a number of distributors (EspressoPartsNW comes to
mind) who have had a standing policy that putting a consumer espresso
machine on a timer automatically voids the warranty. The reason offered by
the owner of EPNW at a convention we attended was:
Some of his suppliers (manufacturers) have this policy because they found
that a disproportionate number of the electrically damaged machines returned
to them had been on timers. EPNW does not try to explain to purchasers that
only some warranties have this exclusion ... it is simpler to apply it to
all sales. (And since the Manufacturer has a larger sample of "broken
machine" histories to study, they probably have a better understanding of
the issue than a distributor, where-as a distributor (WLL) is closer to the
customer and may have a better understanding of customer wants.).
The board discussions generally consist of "I have been using a timer for X
years and my machine has not broken." A number of theories have been
offered for why failure might occur, but no empirical data has ever been
advanced. (I guess people do not want to keep experimenting with their
machines until they force a break ... which is sort of selfish of them,
don't you think?)
The discussion then usually turns to "which timer with what features is
best". The consensus IIRC is that a very heavy duty programmable timer is
best ... some people reported that their light duty timers had failed.
The bottom line here is that:
1. You use a timer at your own risk of seriously breaking the machine... no
one knows the magnitude of that risk and of course each person has a
different attitude toward the consequences of an adverse outcome.
2. If you decide to use a timer, several people (3?) report they like the
Intermatic TN311C Heavy-Duty Grounded Timer. (The previously recommended
DT17 was the subject of a recall

----- Original Message ----- > Hi guys, I am sure this has been covered many
times, but I was told it
wasn't a good idea to put the espresso machine on a timer, due to the
shocking effect of closing the unit un-naturally (was told this by my
seller/supplier). Any data, opinions or comments on that?
